Overview of Computer Science Program:
Believing that instruction in computer science and applications stimulates the cognitive development of all students, The Department of Computer Science provides pupils with the opportunity to explore and nurture their interests in the field of computers. Students who elect this program of study will receive instruction in current computer languages and applications. The complete computer course sequence provides both career and college-bound students with the concepts and skills utilized in a highly skilled, technological society. Courses in this department offer college credit at local community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities. The Advanced Placement test is also available in the fourth year of this course series. Any student contemplating a technology-rich career such as business, engineering, math, or computer science should begin the computer programming sequence as a Freshman with Computer One.
COMPUTER 1 Course 273 1 credit
This introductory course is designed for the college bound student and exposes them to the world of computers in more depth than the half-year course. The course utilizes The Microsoft Office Suite, which includes word processing (Word), spreadsheet (Excel), database (Access) and presentation (PowerPoint) packages. Extensive emphasis is placed on Word and Excel covering all skills required for the Microsoft Office User Specialist –Proficient level. Students also receive application instruction in Access, PowerPoint and the Internet for research purposes. In addition, students are introduced to computer programming in the Visual Basic language, an industry standard for software development. Emphasis is placed on hands-on activities in the computer lab that make it an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience for the student. Students who successfully complete this course may go on to Computer 2 (Advanced Visual Basic Programming.)
Please Note: This course fulfills the graduation requirement of .5 credit in Computer
Literacy. Due to the essential skills taught within this course, it is recommended that all college-bound students complete this course in their Freshman year.
Prerequisite:
- Currently enrolled in Algebra 1 or completion of Algebra 1 with a minimum grade of C
COMPUTER 2 Course 274 1 credit
This course is designed for the average student who would like to continue with his/her computer studies. The curriculum continues the study of Visual Basic and exposes the student to the advanced techniques of computer programming. The student will be expected to design and create programming solutions to problems in several application areas. Emphasis is placed on writing software using good programming techniques.
Prerequisite:
- Completion of Computer 1
- Completion of Mastering the Computer or Microsoft Office Certification Skills-Introductory and Introduction to Programming, with a minimum grade of C
- Permission of the Applied Arts and Sciences Department Chairperson
COMPUTER AP/HONORS Course 280 1 credit
This course is designed for the programming student who wishes to continue in the study of the C++ programming language. This course goes beyond the procedural programming concepts covered in Introduction to C++ and will cover the advanced programming topics so as to prepare the student to take the Advanced Placement Computer Science "A" exam.
Prerequisite:
1. Completion of Computer 4 with a minimum grade of C
2. Permission of the Applied Arts and Sciences Department Chairperson
INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING Course 271 .5 credit
This course is designed for the beginning-programming student. In this course, students are introduced to computer programming in the Visual Basic language, an industry standard for software development. Emphasis is placed on hands-on activities in the computer lab that make it an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience for the student. Students who successfully complete this course and have completed Mastering the Computer or Microsoft Office Certification Skills-Introductory may go on to Computer 2 (Advanced Visual Basic Programming.)
Please note: This course should only be taken by students who have completed
Mastering the Computer or Microsoft Office Certification Skills – Introductory and would like to complete the Visual Basic introductory curriculum.
