Student Council

Advisor: Mr. Jeffrey Schoonover and Mrs. Kathleen Beebe

Description: The Student Council at Portsmouth High School is comprised of fifty-two spirited, dynamic, and enthusiastic students. In order for students to serve as Council members, they must:

  1. be in good academic standing
  2. have the endorsement of three faculty members, the class advisor and parent permission
  3. sign, along with their parent/guardian, the Portsmouth Extracurricular Activity Agreement
  4. be elected by their peers during election week.
Each class has ten (10) seats on the Council; these Council at large members elect among themselves a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The other twelve members are the elected Class Officers.

The Student Council and its members are the "Center" of the student extra-curricular activity program. It is the policy of PHS that all planned activities involving school related clubs be brought before the Council for approval and scheduling.

Many of the Student Council members are asked to serve on subcommittees formed by both the Portsmouth Town Council and the School Committee. These opportunities serve to broaden the students' development of leadership skills, and promote effective communication skills.
