The PHSO’s primary focus is the Book Awards Program held in April. PHS teachers recommend students who receive a certificate and a book that is donated to the PHS library in the student’s name. Some students are recognized for academic achievements, and some are recognized for such things as artistic talent, for helping other students or for working very hard for the grades that they get.

Students are called to the front of the auditorium to receive their certificates and hear about the books given in their names. The Book Award night is the only time that some of these students will receive recognition for anything during their high school years.

The books that are purchased for the library are specifically chosen by the PHS teachers. The money that pays for the books is raised almost entirely by asking parents to join the PHSO and donate $25 for the school year. The only other way the PHSO gets funding is occasionally receiving a small grant, or this year, by running a book sale.

Events that the PHSO is involved in:

1. Freshman Welcome Night in September, where incoming PHS freshmen and women ask a panel of upper classmen and women what high school is like.

2. College Forum in January, where college freshmen and women return to the school to talk to PHS seniors about what college is like.

3. Student Recognition Book Awards (April) - Students are recognized by the faculty and staff for their achievements and efforts, not only academic, but also for artistic, musical, and foreign language skills, for service as a guidance aide and for helping other students. Teachers also recognize students who struggle and work very hard for the grades that they receive.

The teachers select books that reflect the individual student’s interests. The books are donated to the PHS library and contain a bookplate in which the students’ names appear.
